Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. Since her father's death the family, it was looked after by her mother, grandmother, and godparents. She suffered from an anxiety disorder based on the word association when she was a toddler. Ford was attracted to acting in her teenage years and joined the National Youth Theatre. She was accepted to the Sylvia Young Theatre School. After just a week she decided it wasn't suitable for her. Ford, instead of applying to Central School of Speech and Drama and securing a place on her third attempt, applied and won an admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford's debut on TV was an episode in 1991 called Surgical Spirit. By the moment she was done with school, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". Tate was featured in such TV shows such including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly, and London Burning. She worked on stage regularly, and joined The Royal Shakespeare Company's season 2000-2001. Tate gained recognition as a stand-up comedian, which was added to her portfolio in the year 1996.
